Founder, Papillon

I've been writing for pleasure for almost 30 years and working in the corporate world for more than 20. One of those things has paid the bills considerably more reliably than the other.

But throughout those years, I've always found my way back to work involving children and not-for-profit organisations. And outside of work, some of the most important people in my life happen to be very small ones. My nieces. My best friends' children. The little humans I absolutely adore and genuinely can't imagine my life without. And one of my favourite things in the world is reading with them.

I love the bedtime routine. I love watching a child disappear completely into a story. I love when you finish a book and immediately hear, "Again." And I especially love when they bring up something from that story the next day, because somewhere along the way, it stuck.

As I've become more involved in these children's lives, I've heard more about the things their parents are trying to help them through. Huge emotions. A new baby arriving. Starting school. Confidence. Illness. Hospital stays.

They're wonderful, loving parents. They're also, for the most part, not child psychologists. And not every childhood challenge requires sitting a child down and telling them they're about to learn an Important Life Lesson. Sometimes you just need the right story. That thought became Papillon.

What if the book you were already reading at bedtime could also give you a psychologist-informed tool for helping your child through something they're experiencing? What if your child could recognise themselves in that story? And what if we could do that while putting beautiful, physical books back into children's hands and giving them another reason to spend a little less time looking at a screen?

So that's what we're building. Stories written by real writers, illustrated by real artists and shaped with child psychology expertise, created around the real things children and their families are navigating. Books children ask to hear again. Books parents know have something more behind them. And, hopefully, books that stay with little people long after we've turned the final page.
